The Battle of Shiloh
In the beginning of April 1862, Ulysses S. Grant brought 40,000 troops to the Pittsburgh landing. When the Confederates noticed that more men continued to join the Union army in the Pittsburgh landing, General Robert E. Lee decided to fight the Union. Lee sent a sneak attack over to the landing on April 6, 1862, but the Confederates fell to the Union, but not without a fight. Over the course of a two day battle, 23,000 men were either killed, severely injured, or missing in action. After their small victory, the Union blockaded the port of the Mississippi city, Corinth. Since no food or goods were being brought to the city, the south fled Corinth, leaving the land to the Union. Soon after, Memphis Tennessee also fell to the north. These victories helped the Union to gain almost all control of the Mississippi, succeeding to complete part of their strategy.
